During the production of my coursework I have learnt and developed a number of skills and my knowledge of media products and conventions. I have produced my magazine to the best of my ability and have thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I hope you will enjoy it too.

Evaluation Question 2 Final
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
https://www.powtoon.com/online-presentation/czBwy1LtTTV/final-evaluation-question-2/
My magazine is a pop/rock magazine featuring a mixture of mainstream artists such as Ed Sheeran and lesser known artists that are just entering the music business. I think this gives my magazine a wide audience as it will attract the large fan bases of popular artists and helps give smaller artists a boost into the music industry. I think this will appeal to a large audience and make the magazine more interesting than existing magazines that only focus on mainstream artists.
My magazine is aimed at a range of people such as fan girls and indie scenesters as there is content to appeal to a range of people. The fan girls will like the articles on mainstream pop artists but will also be given an opportunity to find new pop artists they may not have found if they were to read another mainstream pop magazine. Fan girls will like this magazine as it is similar to other magazines they like already so they are more likely to buy this product.
People such as indie scenesters, young alts and trendies will like this magazine as it helps them keep ahead of the trends. I think they will buy my magazine as it helps them keep up with current trends and introduce them to new artists. My magazine has a good mix of current and upcoming trends so that it can reach a larger target audience than other similar magazine.

Evaluation Question 1 Final
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
Evaluation question 1
Evaluation question 1
My magazine uses other magazines such as Billboard as style inspiration as this means I can be more certain of it reaching the right target audience as my magazine and Billboard are both aimed at similar people. I also believe that a magazine will look better if it follows conventions that real media products use. My magazine uses conventions such as a masthead and page layouts to make it look professional. I used a H layout for the cover of my magazine as this is used on many other magazines so looks professional. I used this as it meant the text and picture did not get in the way of each other so you can clearly see what is on the cover while allowing the text to interact with the image and appropriately inform the audience.
I also used cover lines to let customers know the major articles in my magazine. I think this is a good feature to use as it captures the interests of the audience and interests them in the magazine. I used a masthead which is used in most real media products as it tells you the name of the magazine and grabs the attention of the audience. I believe this is a vital part of a magazine as it helps people to identify and raise awareness of the product. My masthead uses fff Tujs font as it is interesting and eyecatching. I wanted my masthead to be bold so i chose this font as it stands out and looks different to other magazines
I used a different font for the cover lines as I wanted to use something different so that the magazine name would stand out, I also used a different font for the cover artists name to make it stand out as the mains feature, which I downloaded from Dafont.com. I also made the cover line text different sizes to show the importance of the story. I used a bold colour for my mastheadas well as a bold font to make sure it stands out. The masthead spaced properly as i didnt want it to cover the whole page or obscure the cover artists picture. I also added a white box behind the masthead to draw more attention to it.
The photo I used does follow conventions as it features the cover artist against a black background, close enough to see his face but not too close, as might be done with feamle artists. My magazine uses an indoor shot for the cover photo as I wanted my magazine to focus on the artist rather than what is around him so i chose a simple black background so the artist and any text around him would stand out.
My double page spread follows conventions as it uses a simple layout with one half filled with a picture and the other filled with text as this is a layout used by lots of different magazines such as Q. The font I used on my double page spread also follows conventions as it is simple and easy to read. My draft double page spread used a thin and hard to read font. I made sure that in my final media product the font was easier to read which follows conventions. My contents page uses a similar easy to read font.
I believe the content of my magazine has aspects similar to the content of Q, Billboard and Top of the Pops however I believe it is most similar to Billboard as Q is aimed more at a male audience and Top of the Pops is aimed at a younger audience. My magazine is aimed at a similar audience to Billboard and uses a similar colour scheme however it also has differences such as the font and the age of the artists featured on the cover. The artists in my magazine are similar as it is likely both my magazine and Billboard would include artists such as Ed Sheeran or Jessie J. My magazine is also similar as it follows a similar layout of having one main picture on the cover with cover lines to tell you what is in the magazine whereas in other magazines such as Top of the Pops will have one main picture and a few smaller pictures on the cover. I felt that the style of my magazine should be simple and eye-catching as this is what my audience will prefer.
Evaluation Question 6 Final
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
While making this product I have used a variety of different technologies to help make my magazine. I have used blogger to track the progress of my magazine and Photoshop for the creation of my media product. I have also used simpler technologies such as my phone/Facebook for communication, a camera for taking the photos and my laptop for storing files.
Blogger. I used blogger to help keep track of my progress and show all my work in one place. I had not used blogger before and I had no previous knowledge of it so I learnt as I went along. Blogger has been very useful in helping me display and organise my work and also to get feedback for my magazine.
Camera. I used a camera to take pictures for my magazine. I have previous knowledge of using a camera so was able to take photos with a camera provided by the school for my draft magazine however for my final magazine I decided to get a friends more advanced camera for the final photos and got her to help me so I could get the best photos possible.
Photoshop. I used Photoshop to edit my photos and put my magazine together. I had no previous knowledge of Photoshop however I quickly picked up the skills I needed to create a professional media product. I gained these skills while creating my preliminary magazine and my draft versions of my magazine. I found that some aspects were quite hard to learn and others were relatively easy.
Lighting. I used lighting equipment when taking pictures in the school studio against a blank background. I used these photos in my draft magazine however I decided to use outdoor shots for my final magazine. I used Photoshop to help me edit these photos to get a good light balance when they did not however I tried to make sure they were lit correctly when taking them.
Internet. I used the internet for my research. I found it very useful when looking into existing magazines, institutions and getting feedback.
Computer/laptop. I used my own laptop to help me create my media product. I found it was much easier to have all my files and photos in one place so it was easier than working on a school computer. I sent important files to the school computers as well so they were backed up but most of my work was done from my laptop.
Animoto. I used animoto to help put together my pitch for my magazine. I used it to put together a presentation including information about my magazine and images related to it. I used this presentation to get feedback from my target audience. I had no previous knowledge of animoto but I was able to learn as I went along and soon picked up the skills I needed to create a presentation.
Facebook. I used Facebook as a communication method to organise photo shoots. I found this useful as it is a quick and simple way of contacting people and helped me stay organised and prepared.

Evaluation Question 4 Final
Who would be the audience for your media product?
Indie Scenesters are proper ‘musos,’ fans of electronic, urban and of course indie sounds – they’re fully committed to staying ahead of the curve.
Young Alts are just starting out are voracious consumers of every source of Alt inspiration they can get their hands on, from Kerrang! to Netflix and Spotify. Young Alts are the Tribe for young people who ‘want out’ of the mainstream.
Trendies are driven by beautiful things and beautiful people, Trendies love fashion and are always looking for the next big trend.
My target audience is teens and young adults aged 16-25. I used UK tribes to help me find groups that would like my magazine. I found that fan girls would buy my magazine as it is similar to other magazines they read and includes content about popular artists they are fans of. I used yougov to find out more about my target audience, I also found that other groups on UK tribes would buy my magazine, young alts, indie scenesters and trendies. These groups will like my magazine as it features less well known artists and they like to keep ahead of trends or in the case of trendies they enjoy finding new trends. I think my magazine will appeal to Indie Scenesters as they enjoy finding new artists that other people have yet to discover and like lots of different types of music which I will look at in my magazine. Young Alts will like my magazine as it is different to mainstream magazines and will include artists and music they like. I think Trendies will also like my magazine as one part of it will be finding new artists and trendies enjoy finding new trends. I think fan girls and trendies will be my biggest audience as my magazine features things they will both like. I think young alts and indie scenesters will like this magazine as well as it isn’t completely about already well-known artists. I think my magazine will attract a wide range of people as it doesn’t only focus on artist who are already well know or artists that are yet to be discovered but both at the same time and think these two aspects put together will mean my magazine is open to a larger audience than a magazine focused only on one of these aspects. I wanted my magazine to be different from other existing magazines so I could attract a different audience and make a magazine that addressed a variety of different parts of pop and rock music in one product.

Final Article
So
Sam, how did you get into music?
Well I got my first guitar when I was about
5, I’ve been playing pretty much since then. The guitar I have currently was a
Christmas present when I was 15 from my parents. My dad plays guitar as well, he
taught me when I was younger and introduced me to a lot of classic rock bands. He
was great, he taught me almost everything I know and supported me my whole
life. A lot of parents wouldn’t support a child going into the music industry,
some people don’t see it as a proper career. Mine supported me, my dad helped
me with songs and buying recording equipment.
So
what bands do you like listening to?
I listen to a variety of bands and artists
from different genres to try and broaden my music knowledge. Catfish and the bottle
men, Coldplay, ben Howard, the killers, the artic monkeys. Those are just a few
artists I like. I try and listen to a variety when I can. I listen to artists
like myself, who haven’t got the publicity to properly distribute their music. I
try and support these artists when I can because I know how hard it is when
you’re just starting out.
What
bands inspire you?
Ed Sheeran Is a big inspiration to me, I
love his music. I also like Mumford and sons and passenger, I think I have a
similar sound to these artists in particular so I like to listen to their music
a lot. I don’t actually get inspired to write songs after listening to them, I
never listen to music when I write. I find it easier to write when there are no
distractions, so I try to avoid listening to music. I do find inspiration from
them though. I often hear lines I like that give me ideas for a song, or a
certain kind of beat or feeling. Of course to start off with I made covers of
songs to go on my YouTube channel. In terms of actions Ed Sheeran is a big
inspiration to me, his new record label especially. He’s able to use what he
has to find new, amazing artists and get them publicity. So yeah Ed Sheeran in
particular has been a big inspiration to me.
Do
you have a guilty pleasure music genre?
House music and EDM. I listen to it quite a
lot actually. It’s just so different from what I play it gives me a break from
it. I spend a lot of my time writing songs and playing guitar so it gives me a
bit of variety. I try to listen to a variety of music and artists like me who
are just starting out. I want to be able to support artists who just need that
boost to find a bigger audience and get their music out there.
What
other hobbies do you have besides music?
Nothing very interesting. I enjoy playing
on my Xbox with my mates, watching TV. I’m a big fan of Game of Thrones. Me and
a few friends often meet up to watch it when it's on or binge watch episodes
together. I enjoy doing things with my friends, sometimes just chilling and
watching films together, sometimes we go out and play football at the local
football field. I spent my free time listening to music and practising guitar.
I’m quite dedicated to my music but I don’t spend all my time playing or
writing songs. I read a lot when I’m not busy with work or music.
Do
you have places or people that inspire you?
I often find myself coming up with songs on
the bus. When I was in college I had to get the bus there and back every day so
I spent the time thinking up lyrics. Sometimes I steal ideas or just a feeling
from other songs I hear or conversations around me. It depends on my mood,
sometimes I can really get into it, write a few verses at a time other times
it’s just the first line.
What
do you write your songs about?
I try to write songs that people can relate
to, not necessarily things I’ve experienced myself but things others can
understand and might have gone through themselves. I mean I’m only 19, I
haven’t experienced a lot of things that others have. I can’t relate to my
whole audience if I just write about my own experiences. Sure I write about
myself and my own experiences, I want my audience to feel like they know me, I
don’t want to be like other musicians that are kind of removed from their fans.
But there are a lot of things I can write about that I haven’t personally
experienced. I suppose it’s like being a writer, they often don’t write about
their own experiences. It’s about engaging the audience and writing songs they
will enjoy.
How
do you begin writing your songs?
I just start with one line, then move on
from there. Sometimes I get stuck on the first line, sometimes I end up with a
song. Sometimes the first line will just come to me, other times I have to
really think, imagine myself in different situations, think about things
friends have said, stuff like that to help me come up with the first line. From
there on I just work with the first line until I have a song. Most of the time
I end up changing bits of it anyway, I don’t usually get a perfect song from
the first try. Once I have the song I start coming up with a tune, working out
exactly how I want it to sound.
Any
awkward music experiences?
Once, when I was just starting out, I did a
gig at the local pub. I was really excited about it, practising all day to make
sure I knew the songs perfectly. I arrived half an hour too early, I was so
psyched to get started. I waited for about an hour and a half for people to
turn up. About ten people showed up in the end. I played anyway, and the people
that turned up seemed to enjoy it. It turned out to be a really good gig, I
just had high expectations leading up to it. And that’s not even the worst
experience I’ve had. I once did a gig, one of the biggest I had done at the
time and I was part way though the set, people were really getting into it when
one of my guitar strings snapped. It was terrible, right in the middle of a
song.
So
how did you get noticed?
Well when I started out I had a YouTube
channel and I made a few videos of me singing. After a while I was able to make
a music video with the help of my friend for my song Simon Says. I asked all my
friends to share it and people started seeing it and soon it had 20,000 views.
It was crazy. I never had that many views before that but people really liked the
music video so I started making a few more for my best songs. I did one for
Half Past 5 and then one for Wild Card Girl and that really not me noticed. I
started getting 10,000 views on all my videos and I got up to about 50,000 on
Simon Says. It gave me the boost I needed to get writing, which I did until I
had enough for an EP. I released a few EPs and then one day I got a call from
Atlantic Records saying they wanted to meet with me. I went in a few days later
and played them some of my stuff and they loved it. Since then it’s just been
about getting my music out there so people can hear it and hopefully enjoy it.
How
did you start your career once you were signed to Atlantic Records?
Well I started by creating an album, Tunnel
Vision. It’s all my best songs from before I was signed and a few afterwards. I
went on tour as the supporting act for Tom Butler, one of my favourite
musicians. That was really fun and it got me a lot of publicity. After that I
finished working on Tunnel Vision. I’m really proud to get my first album out,
it’s a big step for me, after having a few EPs on sound cloud and now I have an
album that’s being officially produced. It’s been a lot of hard work but it’s
also been lots of fun. I’m just really happy to have my music out there for
people to enjoy.
Anything
you want to say to your fans?
Yeah. I want to thank them for all the
support, especially those who have been there from the beginning, right when I
started out. You guys are the reason I play, so you can hear and hopefully
enjoy my music.

Publishers
Bauer Media Group is a large European-based media company, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany that manages a portfolio of more than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world. The portfolio extends to include print shops, postal, distribution and marketing services.
Bauer is a large media company I think could be suitable to publish my magazine. Bauer publishes a large number of music magazines including Q and Kerrang! so will be able to help my magazine become more well known. I think they would be more likely to publish it than a company that does not publish music magazines like mine.
Photographers
Photographer: Jan Welters
I like Jan's style of photographs and feel the style and filter would be appropriate to use in my magazine. I like the way she poses models as these poses are interesting and different from commonly used ones. I like the focus on the face rather than the whole body, I will consider using this when taking photos for my magazine.
Photographer: Camilla Akrans
I like this style of photo and the use of natural environments in the images. I think this could work for my magazine however I think this style works better with female models so I will not use this as my main inspiration. I would like to try and incorporate the style into my photos however as this style is interesting and eye-catching.

Audience profile
I used YouGov to research my target audience and create a profile for both male and females within my audience.
Audience research
I used UK Tribes to find groups that fit into my target audience and will make up the main audience of my magazine.
Townies
Always
there at the bottom of the influence pyramid, the Townies are an entry-level
Tribe, open to all that want to play…
Townies are as Mainstream as you can get –
high street fashion, pop chart music, Saturday night TV and a night on the
town. As the rest of the Tribal map is becoming more fashion-forward and
fast-moving, the Townies are still in the local Wetherspoons or on the bus to
college – they are likely to be friends with Blingers and other Tribes, but
prefer to go with the flow and don’t want to stand out.
Fan Girls
Fan
Girls and Tumblr Kids have merged – 24/7 access to celebs means this Tribe are
getting younger and moving faster than ever.
It’s strange to think that in 2012 Fan
Girls were a new Tribe – today they are one of the most noticeable and well
known facets of UK Youth culture! United by their love for musicians, vloggers,
bloggers, models, books, TV series, TV personalities (and anyone in between)
the Fan Girls start at 13 years upwards and are a powerful force on social
media – and big spenders on merchandise and experiences.
Young Alts
The
Tribe who ‘want out’ of the Mainstream – an experimental Tribe trying anything
and everything Alternative from Grunge to Hardcore…
Young Alts are a long standing youth Tribe
– the entry level Alternatives that simply want to set themselves apart from
the Mainstream by looking alternative, listening to alternative music, having
alternative views… Even if they are Mainstream in every other sense!
My magazine will include a mix of mainstream and 'indie' features as along with the main features on mainstream artists and bands there will be features on new artists for those who like to be ahead of the trends. I think the feature on new and rising stars will appeal to this audience as well as the mainstream audience and broadens the types of people interested in reading and buying my magazine.

I like Alan Fletchers style as it uses bold colour schemes and bold or interesting fonts. I like the colour scheme used in his mind over matter piece and I also like the style of fonts he used. I will try and use some of these features when designing my magazine as I like the style. I think i will try and include a few bright colours into my magazine to make sure it stands out against more neutral colours.
