Publishers

Bauer Media Group is a large European-based media company, headquartered in Hamburg, Germany that manages a portfolio of more than 600 magazines, over 400 digital products and 50 radio and TV stations around the world. The portfolio extends to include print shops, postal, distribution and marketing services.

Bauer is a large media company I think could be suitable to publish my magazine. Bauer publishes a large number of music magazines including Q and Kerrang! so will be able to help my magazine become more well known. I think they would be more likely to publish it than a company that does not publish music magazines like mine.

Photographers

Photographer: Jan Welters
I like Jan's style of photographs and feel the style and filter would be appropriate to use in my magazine. I like the way she poses models as these poses are interesting and different from commonly used ones. I like the focus on the face rather than the whole body, I will consider using this when taking photos for my magazine.

Photographer: Camilla Akrans
I like this style of photo and the use of natural environments in the images. I think this could work for my magazine however I think this style works better with female models so I will not use this as my main inspiration. I would like to try and incorporate the style into my photos however as this style is interesting and eye-catching.

Audience profile

I used YouGov to research my target audience and create a profile for both male and females within my audience.

Audience research

I used UK Tribes to find groups that fit into my target audience and will make up the main audience of my magazine.

Townies
Always there at the bottom of the influence pyramid, the Townies are an entry-level Tribe, open to all that want to play…
Townies are as Mainstream as you can get – high street fashion, pop chart music, Saturday night TV and a night on the town. As the rest of the Tribal map is becoming more fashion-forward and fast-moving, the Townies are still in the local Wetherspoons or on the bus to college – they are likely to be friends with Blingers and other Tribes, but prefer to go with the flow and don’t want to stand out.

Fan Girls
Fan Girls and Tumblr Kids have merged – 24/7 access to celebs means this Tribe are getting younger and moving faster than ever.
It’s strange to think that in 2012 Fan Girls were a new Tribe – today they are one of the most noticeable and well known facets of UK Youth culture! United by their love for musicians, vloggers, bloggers, models, books, TV series, TV personalities (and anyone in between) the Fan Girls start at 13 years upwards and are a powerful force on social media – and big spenders on merchandise and experiences.

Young Alts
The Tribe who ‘want out’ of the Mainstream – an experimental Tribe trying anything and everything Alternative from Grunge to Hardcore…
Young Alts are a long standing youth Tribe – the entry level Alternatives that simply want to set themselves apart from the Mainstream by looking alternative, listening to alternative music, having alternative views… Even if they are Mainstream in every other sense!

My magazine will include a mix of mainstream and 'indie' features as along with the main features on mainstream artists and bands there will be features on new artists for those who like to be ahead of the trends. I think the feature on new and rising stars will appeal to this audience as well as the mainstream audience and broadens the types of people interested in reading and buying my magazine.

Graphic designer

Alan Fletcher
Born- 27 September 1931
Died-  21 September 2006
Nationality- British
Occupation- Graphic designer

I like Alan Fletchers style as it uses bold colour schemes and bold or interesting fonts. I like the colour scheme used in his mind over matter piece and I also like the style of fonts he used. I will try and use some of these features when designing my magazine as I like the style. I think i will try and include a few bright colours into my magazine to make sure it stands out against more neutral colours.

Magazine titles

The title of a magazine says a lot about it so I took a lot of care when picking mine and made sure to ask opinions of my target audience throughout the process.

As my magazine is about finding new artists I wanted the name of the magazine to reflect this to give people an idea of what its about before they start reading it. For this reason I came up with names such as:
Uncovered
Exposed
Unveiled
Revealed
Into the light
Discovered
Unknown
Noticed
Spotted

After asking some people who would read my magazine their opinions on names I found that the most popular were Exposed and Discovered. However after further thought I decided that Exposed sounds very much like a gossip magazine and Discovered sounds like a nature magazine. From here I decided to find some new names similar to this using a thesaurus. I soon found these names:
Red Hot
Newbies
The Latest
Raw
Beginning
Real
Strike

After talking with my target audience again I found that the name Raw was the favourite however it didn't quite work. I then tried looking at some of these names in different languages. To begin with I tried Latin and I came up with:
Novus (new)
Apertus (uncovered)
Novicius (raw)

I still didn't like any of these names so I tried names I had already thought of in other languages:
Ignotus (unknown in Latin)
Löydetty (discovered in Finnish)
Märkt (noticed in Swedish)
Tantum in lucem (into the light in Latin)
Ruga varma (red hot in Esperanto)
Ictus (strike in Latin)
La lasta (The latest in Esperanto)
Ra (raw in Norwegian)

After looking at these names I decided I still liked the name raw as it sounded good in other languages (Zalias (Croatian), Ra (Norwegian) and Raaka (Finish). I tried it in different languages and while experimenting with it and other names I liked (New, Discovered etc.) I found the title Nova. Nova is Esperanto for the word New. I like this title because it sounds similar to the word new which gives the audience an insight to the magazine and what it writes about. It also makes me think of a Supernova which is a "massive stellar explosion that outshines galaxies". I like this idea as it is saying the artists are very talented which will draw people to read my magazine.

After looking at all these different names I have decided to go with Nova as my magazine name.

Existing Magazine Titles

These are all existing magazine titles. I have noticed lots seem to be short and snappy to grab your attention e.g. Q or Vibe. Others are longer but give you more of an idea of what the magazine is about e.g. Top Of The Pops. I would like my title to be short and snappy to get more attention but as it is a new magazine it should also give some idea of what it is about to attract people to buy it. For this reason I will try and choose a title for my magazine that is short to catch your attention but also tells you a bit about the magazine you are going to read.

Colour schemes

These are a few colour schemes that I am considering as they are often used in existing magazines:
